Femina anyone ?

Recently me and a friend were having a heated argument about why people break traffic rules, about why people drive on the wrong side of the road. I was basically defending the government whereas my friend was trying to justify the reason why people break rules. It seems that people have a general apathy about the administration, the government and they've had enough. Therefore they break the rules. They are instigated by the government and its draconian laws to break the rules. I disagree, here's my take on the issue :

1) Indians have a general attitude of sitting on the other side of the fence and criticizing everything. That's human nature yes, but in Indians its more prominent.
2) Its the easy thing to blame the government (me included).
3) The basic corrupt nature of humans translates to corrupt intentions of the government. As I said its easy to blame the government for corruption, inefficiencies. But how many of us actually pay the tax that we are supposed to. We tend to fake every possible bill possible. Of course we have a justification to do that because the government anyways wastes the tax money. But have you actually tried paying taxes ? I suggest we use the RTI bill to the hilt to ensure accountability of your tax money.
4) I have a plan of speaking to every cop on the street and just reminding him that he is not the law, but the upholder of the law. He helps us live peacefully and not the other way around. I believe if everyone does this, it will positively make a difference.
5) We make a small difference by contributing to citizen's charters/forums,etc. Recently most of the corporations call on the citizens before making any major decisions (Budget, traffic diversions, etc). If there is a huge attendance of citizens(and not the usual Socialist junta), I believe it will make a difference.
6) Finally love the country as much as you love your family, wife, kids, job, car, the new Ipod, etc.

Disclaimer : These are my views only and in no way suggest a path for a positive and an enriching life in India !

On a unrelated note, during my previous visit to the barber shop I had the most funniest incident. The background of the story is that in India barbers are considered to be as masculine as masculine can be. They love their malishes, neck crunching, oiling the moustaches, etc. However outside India, barbers are generally more on the edge of their respective gender (If you know what I mean). So the story is that during my last visit to the barber, I was getting myself a face massage( How masculine is that !??) and asked for a magazine. The smiling barber came with a copy of Femina. I told the barber,"Isn't there a different magazine around ? " and to my surprise the barber came back with a new glossy femina and told me in Marathi with so much excitement," Saheb, Its just come today. Its the latest copy and its the money special edition !!". Man, Its so funny. 10 years back you'd hardly expect a femina let alone a l'oreal dye, wella hair straightener, shehnaz face pack, nyle shampoos, vatika oil, jordan bleaches, in a Men's barber shop in India :) !

Well who said India is doing badly ... in spite of all these idiosyncrasies, it pulls through with a smile.
